If you find yourself not using your timeshare, but you aren’t ready or interested in exiting your timeshare permanently, , there is another option available: renting it.
Renting your timeshare can provide you with some additional funds while you are not using your timeshare, and it gives you the ability to use it again when you’re ready to travel.
How to Rent Your Timeshare
Let’s start by figuring out how much you should charge for your timeshare rental. There are several ways to figure this out:
- Ask your resort or timeshare company for help. Some resorts or timeshare companies offer rental services for owners. They will have a realistic view of how much you should charge to rent your timeshare.
It’s also important to check with your resort or management company before listing your timeshare. Not all ownership agreements allow rentals, and some may have specific requirements or restrictions. Always confirm what’s permitted under your contract to avoid any potential issues.
- Search the internet. Search the internet to see what prices people are asking to rent timeshares like yours. You can search by resort name, the week available, and the type of timeshare (multi-bedroom, etc.). Remember, the week you have, the resort location, and other factors make a significant difference in rental prices. Try to compare prices with timeshares that are like yours to get the best idea of how much you should list it for.
- Use your maintenance fees as a basis for the rental price. While there may not be a direct correlation between what someone will pay to rent your timeshare and the maintenance fees you pay, that is still a great place to start. You can always lower the price later, but raising the price may cause your timeshare to go unrented.
Next, let’s look at where you can post your timeshare rental.
List your timeshare for rent with your resort or timeshare company. If your resort or timeshare company has a timeshare rental program , this can be a great option. They will have expertise in listing timeshares for rent and will have a large reach. Not only do people frequently check resort sites for rentals, but often the resort will advertise their rental properties on multiple platforms and websites.
- List your timeshare with a timeshare rental website. There is a wide assortment of timeshare rental websites available online. Some of these websites are dedicated exclusively to timeshare rental (see our list here) and others have large timeshare rental sections but are not exclusively dedicated to timeshare rentals (like Airbnb, VRBO, and more).
- List your timeshare for rent with a realtor or rental company associated with your resort. Contact your resort or do a search online to see if there are realtors or other people/companies that specialize in renting timeshares from your resort. Much like your going to your resort directly, these people will have a larger reach to get your timeshare in front of the most potential renters.
Our Advice: If you are looking for a way to make some money while you are not using your timeshare, renting your timeshare may be the answer; especially if you may want to use your timeshare again in the future. As with most timeshare transactions, start with your resort. If they have a rental program that may be the easiest, most effective, and inexpensive way to rent your timeshare.
